What is Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

What is HBOT?

Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy is a medical treatment combining the inhalation of up to 95% oxygen
in an environment with greater than normal atmospheric pressure.

How does HBOT work?

Under normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells. With HBOT, oxygen is dissolved into all of the body’s fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system fluids, the lymph, and the bone and can be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked.  In this way, extra oxygen can reach all of the damaged tissues and the body can support its own healing process.  Individuals can absorb up to 10 times more oxygen with HBOT which greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria, reduces swelling and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into the affected areas.  It is a simple, non-invasive and painless treatment.

What can HBOT help?

Hyperbaric Oxygen is used to treat all conditions which benefit from increased oxygen as well as infections where it can be effective because of its antibiotic properties. Here is a list of both empirically and non empirically proven conditions HBOT can help:

  • Air or Gas Embolism
  • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
  • Compartment Syndrome/Crush Injury/Other Traumatic Ischemias
  • Decompression Sickness (Bends)
  • Diabetic and selected wounds
  • Gas gangrene
  • Intracranial Abscess
  • Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infection
  • Osteoradionecrosis and Radiation Tissue Damage
  • Skin Grafts and (Compromised) Flaps
  • Thermal Burns
  • Autism
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Lyme Disease
  • Migraine
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Recovery from Plastic Surgery
  • Sports Injuries
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic Brain Injury.

HBOT Sessions

Please be aware that your scheduled session of 1 hour does not include the time required for compression and decompression of the chamber. Therefore please allow for an additional 15-30 minutes with each appointment. For example, if you have a 1-hour appointment scheduled for 8:00AM, it is likely that your treatment will conclude closer to 9:20AM.
